Guidelines

We are currently CLOSED for submissions!

Send all submissions to handwrittenandco@gmail.com. We’re not strict about guidelines, but try to adhere to them.

You should include your name, along with an (optional) short biographical statement in the body of the email.

NOTE: We’re also open to hybrid work; just pick whichever of the following categories your work most strongly identifies with and follow those guidelines.

  • POETRY: Submit up to six (6) poems at a time. Upon rejection, you may send more. Please send them as an attachment in the email, with all the poems formatted in a single document . Your name should not appear anywhere in the document. We highly prefer being sent multiple poems in a submission, as this gives us a more holistic view of your work. [OPEN]

  • ESSAY: Send only one piece at a time. No word limit. We’re looking mainly for personal essays and memoir, but also criticism (cultural and/or literary), craft essays about poetry/prose, etc. We like all sorts of reviews, but particularly those that look inward, or offer cultural commentary wider than the book itself. Feel free to send a proposal or a finished piece. Send as attachment (pdf, word, etc.) [OPEN]

  • SHORT FICTION: We request short fiction be 1000-6500 words long. If it exceeds this word limit, it will likely not be considered, unless truly exceptional. Send one piece at a time. Send as attachment (pdf, word, etc.) [OPEN]

  • FLASH: Must be under 1000 words to be considered for flash fiction. Say as much as you can with the words you have. You may submit up to three (3) flash pieces at a time, as an attachment (pdf, word, etc.) [OPEN]

  • Art (Digital, Traditional, Photography, Collage, etc.): JPG’s and PDF’s considered only. If you send in traditional art, remember to scan it properly! [ALWAYS OPEN]

We welcome simultaneous submissions, though you should alert us immediately if your work gets picked up elsewhere.
Any trace of plagiarism or hate speech will cause immediate disqualification. Just don’t.
